JOURNEY

An exhibition of prints by Cotswold artist Jeremy Brookes

Opening on Saturday 14 January and running for three weeks, this solo show is an extraordinary collection of original woodcut prints and monoprints.

These simple printed lines connect Jeremy to real places and remind him of the times he has walked there. Yet they are not maps in the traditional sense. It is uncertain that anyone else could navigate the same landscape using them as a guide.

Instead, these lines seek to connect the viewer to their own inner landscapes, and perhaps help them to navigate to some forgotten time and place of their own.

The woodblocks are cut in a freehand manner, without any significant planning or sketching. Jeremy is seeking to record how he maps the land he regularly walks in, how he remembers the relationships between the pathways, boundaries and field lines.

JOURNEY - an exhibition of prints by Jeremy Brookes, 14 January 2023

Printing is an extension of his drawing practice. When Jeremy is carving the woodblocks, the process becomes a form of sketching, only with a little carving chisel in the hand rather than a pencil.

The act of choosing which places to map reflects the role of significant landmarks within his walks. As Jeremy works in his studio on these pieces he is selecting reference points from his memories, linking pathways together and refining them as a visual map of physical and emotional journeys within the Cotswolds.

All prints in this solo show are individually priced.
