HIDDEN LIVES

HIDDEN LIVES exhibition

You are warmly invited to join us on Saturday 3 June for an informal Private View.

HIDDEN LIVES is an exhibition in print, paint and sculpture that explores the hidden nature of the artist’s presence behind their work.

The exhibition is a collaboration between Cotswold artists Jeremy Brookes and Louise Hawkins and author Harriet Hitchen, in response to Harriet’s debut novel nude. A modern day retelling of the life of Pre-Raphaelite painter Joanna Boyce, the novel looks at how an artist is represented by their work, and the way material is left behind for historians to tell the story of an artist’s life in the future.

Jeremy Brookes’ practice is centred on the idea that art is a form of self-portrait. The act of walking in the Cotswold landscape is the key for him – and the idea that what he finds of interest in his surroundings is a reflection of himself. Producing a series of large-scale vessels for the show, Jeremy’s work is abstract, tactile and impactful.

Trained at Goldsmiths and living and working in the Cotswolds, Louise Hawkins is a still-life specialist. She groups, arranges and curates objects until they are harmonious, and then she is ready to paint. The results are stunning. Through a series of paintings and preparatory sketches, Louise will be sharing aspects of her experiences as a painter which are normally concealed behind her work. Often subtly autobiographical due to the personal histories of the objects she assembles, Louise is exploring her presence in her work with great candour and curiosity.

Harriet Hitchen is an author and art collector based in Cheltenham. She is contributing two limited edition posters for the show which will be available on the day. These are word based artworks, using monologues from the novel.

There will also be a limited number of signed copies of Harriet’s novel nude available to purchase during the exhibition. To guarantee your signed copy, you can reserve your book through our online shop.
